A mudroom fails for one reason: the hooks are set at adult height, so the children cannot use them and their coats end up on the floor by the door. Two hook heights fixes most of it, and it costs nothing to plan.
Adult hooks sit around sixty to sixty six inches, high enough that a long coat hangs clear of the floor. Children reach nothing at that height, so a second row at roughly forty to forty two inches gives them somewhere to put their own coat, which is the only way it ever happens.
The bench is eighteen inches to the seat, the same as a dining chair, because its actual job is somewhere to sit while boots come off. Fourteen to seventeen inches deep is common in a tight space, but twenty to twenty two is where it becomes a seat rather than a ledge.

Twelve inches is enough for cubbies, bags and shoes, and it is the depth to choose when the room is narrow and you would rather keep the floor. Eighteen inches is the usual standard for a locker, because that is what a bulky winter coat on a hook needs without being crushed against the back.
Twenty two to twenty four inches is what you need if coats go on hangers behind doors, since a hanger is wider than most people assume. Choosing twelve and then hanging parkas in it is the mistake we see most often, and it cannot be corrected later.
