A small hydraulic damper catches the door in the last few inches and puts it down quietly. It sounds like a comfort feature and is mostly a durability one: nothing in the kitchen slams, so nothing gradually shakes itself loose.

How it works

A Damper in the Hinge Arm

Inside the hinge arm is a small cylinder of hydraulic fluid. As the door swings toward the frame the arm compresses it, and the fluid can only move through a restricted path, so the door slows over the last few inches and settles rather than banging shut. Runners work the same way at the back of a drawer.

The everyday benefit is quiet. The longer-term one is that nothing is ever shock-loaded. A door that slams for ten years works its screws loose, wears the hinge bores oval and stresses the joint between the frame and the panel, and none of that happens to a door that is caught.

How Soft-Close Gets Fitted

  1. Check what you have now

    Older surface and semi-concealed hinges cannot take a damper. Those need concealed cup hinges, which means new bores in the door, and that is a permanent change we flag first.

  2. Match the hinge to the door

    Weight and overlay both matter. A heavy solid door on an undersized hinge sags, and a full-overlay door needs a different arm from a partial one. Neither is interchangeable.

  3. Set the closing speed

    The tension screw is set with the door hung rather than on the bench. Heavy doors want it slower, light ones faster, and it takes a minute per door to get right.

  4. Return once they settle

    Doors move slightly in the first month as the hinges bed in. A second visit re-adjusts speed and alignment, which is when most of the fine tuning actually happens.

When it wears

It Fails Gently, Which Matters

Quality hinges are rated for fifty to a hundred thousand cycles, which is roughly fifteen to twenty five years of normal kitchen use. That is a long time for a mechanism that gets used several times a day, and it is the reason the hardware is worth specifying properly rather than economising on.

What happens at the end of that is worth knowing: the damper stops damping and the door simply closes normally again. It does not seize, drop or jam. You lose the feature and keep the door, which is about the best failure mode a moving part can have.

Most complaints are not worn dampers at all. Doors that slam usually have a tension screw that has drifted, a loose mounting plate or screws that have pulled in the wood. All three are adjustments rather than replacements, and all three are why we return once after new doors or a reface settle, the same visit that fine-tunes handle alignment.
