Most kitchens people want to change do not need new boxes. If the sink stays, the fridge stays and the working triangle stays, then what actually bothers you is every surface you touch and see, and that is what cabinet refacing replaces.
What decides it is the carcass rather than the door. Boxes have to be solid, square and dry, and the ones that fail that test are almost always the few that have lived under a dishwasher or beside a slow leak. That is normally one run, not a whole kitchen.

Doors, material, overlay
Door style, material and overlay are chosen together, because changing overlay changes door sizes and reveals. Samples stay with you while you decide, and the written quote follows by the linear foot.
Build and schedule
Your doors go into production at your sizes. Three to five weeks is normal. We book the install week once the doors have a firm date, not before, so the crew does not arrive to a half-delivered order.
Install, align, walkthrough
Veneer, doors, hinges and glides go on over three to five days, cleaned down each evening. Every door is aligned before we leave, and a return visit re-adjusts anything that settles in the first month.

What Else Changes While the Doors Are Off
The install week is the cheapest moment to fix the things that annoy you daily. With the doors off, adding pull-out shelves to a base cabinet is straightforward, and a blind corner can finally be made reachable. Doing it later means a second visit and a second charge.
Hardware is the other easy win. Older surface hinges give way to concealed cup hinges as part of a reface anyway, so upgrading to soft-close hinges costs very little extra at that point. New island cabinetry can be added in the same week if the plan calls for it.
Countertops are the exception to that logic. Quartz and granite are templated after the cabinetry is set, not before, so quartz countertops follow the cabinet work rather than running alongside it. That is the one part of the schedule that cannot be compressed.

Costs, timing, and the kitchens where we tell people not to reface.
Reface when the boxes are sound and the layout works. Replace when the plan is the problem, meaning you want to move the sink, widen a run or open a wall. Often the honest answer is both: one water-damaged run gets new boxes and the rest is refaced to match.
By the linear foot of cabinet run, not per door. Refacing is roughly $125 to $300 a foot depending on material, so a twenty-four foot kitchen sits near $3,000 to $7,200. Custom cabinetry is well above that. Example ranges, not quotes.
Barely at all on a reface. Install is three to five days and the sink and appliances stay connected. Changing countertops at the same time is the exception, because that does take the sink out for a period.
Because they are made to your openings and your overlay rather than pulled from stock. Three to five weeks between signing and install is normal. A supplier promising doors next week is selling stock sizes that will not fit your kitchen properly.
No. Boxes need to be solid, square and dry. Sagging particleboard, water damage, metal cabinets and boxes carrying a smell that will not clean out are all better replaced, and we say so before quoting rather than after a deposit.
Yes, and they are templated after the cabinetry is set rather than before. That sequence matters: a template taken off old cabinets will not fit new ones, so countertops always follow the cabinet work.
Nothing, unless you ask. A standard reface covers what you see from outside, so shelves, interior sides and old liner paper stay as they are. Roll-outs and organisers can be added and are quoted separately.
Yes. Vanities, laundry rooms, mudrooms, home offices and garage storage all use the same cabinetry and the same crew. It is often cheaper to do a bathroom vanity in the same visit as a kitchen.
