Worktops & stone

Edmonton countertops, templated after the cabinets

Worktops come last for a reason. A template taken off old cabinets will not fit new ones, so the stone is measured once the cabinetry is in and level. Four pages here cover the materials, the timeline and the backsplash.

Quartz or granite

Sealing and Heat Split the Two

Installed, granite runs roughly $40 to $100 a square foot and quartz $50 to $120, so granite is usually $10 to $20 cheaper on a comparable slab. Example ranges, not quotes. Over the life of the worktop the totals end up close, because granite asks for sealing every year or two and quartz asks for nothing.

Heat is where they genuinely differ. Granite is natural stone and takes very high temperatures without complaint. Quartz is stone bound in resin, and the resin is the weak point, so a pan straight off the hob can mark it. A trivet solves that, but only if you use one.

So the choice is rarely really about price at all. It comes down to which small habit you would rather live with: sealing a worktop every year or two, or remembering to reach for a trivet before a pan goes down. Neither is difficult, and people know which one they will actually do. See granite, how templating works and backsplash options.

How it works

How a Worktop Reaches Your Kitchen

  1. Cabinets set and levelled

Nothing is measured until the cabinetry is in and level. A template taken early fits a kitchen that no longer exists by the time the stone is cut.

  2. Template on site

Laser or physical strips, capturing every cutout, overhang and out-of-square wall. Edge profile, seam placement, overhang and sink reveal are all agreed on that visit.

  3. Fabrication

One to two weeks in the shop: slab cut, edges shaped and polished, cutouts made and seams prepared. This is the part nobody can compress.

  4. Fit and finish

Installed, seams joined and polished, then sealed if the material needs it. Three to six weeks from template to fitted is the normal window.

Common questions

Countertop Questions, Answered

Materials, timeline, sequencing and what gets decided when.

Quartz needs no sealing and granite takes heat far better. Granite is usually $10 to $20 a square foot cheaper up front, and over the worktop's life the totals converge. It is a maintenance choice more than a money one.
Installed, granite runs roughly $40 to $100 per square foot and quartz $50 to $120. Example ranges, not quotes. Edge profile, cutouts and the number of seams all move the figure.
Three to six weeks from template to fitted. Templating happens within about a week of signing, fabrication takes one to two weeks, and installation follows. The shop time is not compressible.
Because stone is cut to the template and the template records what is physically there. Measure against old cabinets and the worktop arrives fitting the kitchen you just removed.
Agreed at template rather than decided in the shop. Seams go where they are least visible and where the slab allows, and you see the plan before anything is cut.
In stone, anything beyond about twelve inches wants corbels or legs. That is settled at template, because it changes what the island looks like from the seating side.
Yes, provided the existing cabinetry is sound and level. We check that first, because a worktop on cabinets that are neither is a short-lived worktop.

They showed me exactly where the seam would fall before anything was cut. It sits behind the tap where I genuinely cannot see it.

I wanted quartz and cook on gas a lot. They explained the heat limit honestly and I went granite instead. Right call.

Templated only once the cabinets were level. Another company had offered to measure a fortnight earlier, which I now understand would have been a disaster.

Five weeks from template to fitted, which they quoted as five weeks. The shop time is the shop time and nobody pretended otherwise.
